Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017, and quickly became the number one streamed track in just 6 months. It was a combination of reggaeton and pop, which was not just a new ear to reggaeton, but an increase in interest in Latin music. In 2015, there were two songs that were predominantly Spanish-language on the Billboard Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. During the height of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 predominantly Spanish tracks made it into the Top 100 as well, and by 2020 there were 41 songs. When Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, popular musicians began to join forces together with reggaeton singers. Drake and Bad Bunny have collaborated on MIA (2018) and Madonna and Maluma were on the same track in Medellin and Medellin in 2019 In the years 2020, many Reggaeton performers were complaining about its direction towards mainstream. However, a younger generation Rauw Alejandro, was keen to continue the evolution. It often featured elements from electronic dance and other genres.
